Happy Monday! I am super excited about today’s post for two major reasons: (1) I get to talk about my newly found passion — essential oils, and (2) I will show you how easy it is to combine clean beauty products with the zero waste lifestyle! So, ladies and gentlemen (do men care about the length of their lashes?), I am happy to introduce to you a super simple yet very effective recipe for an eyelash growth serum.
If you took the time to read my #20for2020, you already know that this year I am trying to reduce the amount of waste I dispose. While the bathroom might be the smallest room in your house, it can create a whole lot of waste. Before jumping into the list, I do want to take a second and discourage you from heading into the bathroom and tossing out everything that’s made out of plastic. Wouldn’t that be wasteful by default? Zero waste lifestyle won’t happen overnight. My advice is to use up what you have (all of it!), and purchase zero waste products as needed. Okay, now that I got that off my chest, I’m ready to show you my favourite zero waste or sustainable bathroom products.
While Lush has been popular in the UK for quite some time, it is just now gaining people’s favour in the States as well. This particular shampoo bar leaves your hair clean, shiny, and smelling amazing! The best part about this product? Absolutely no packaging! Lush also carries conditioner bars, but since my hair is short, I can get by without it — though I might try it one day.
In the United States alone, it is estimated that over 1 billion plastic toothbrushes will end up in landfills every year. Sadly, all this plastic somehow makes its way into our oceans. Millions of animals die every year because they digest our non-biodegradable waste. Why would you wanna stick PVC in your mouth several times a day anyway? Want to make the switch? You can try these Charcoal Bamboo Toothbrushes! You won’t regret it.
Pachafetti Bar Soap
Made with sustainably produced palm oil, wild harvested unrefined Shea butter, and hydrating castor seed oil, this is an amazing gluten-free, cruelty-free, and vegan product without SLS, parabens, or sulphates. It keeps my skin perfectly hydrated, and the lovely lemongrass scent leaves a smile on my face every time I use it. I get this product from Whole Foods, but I did some research, and you can get it from the manufacturer’s website as well.
Dutchess Menstrual Cup
Thanks to Generation Good’s period campaign, I started paying attention to the materials store-bought menstrual products are made of. Sure, you can buy eco-friendly, organic tampons and pads, but there are numerous reasons you should switch to menstrual cups. For example, it is much better for your body — tampons absorb over 30% of your natural moisture, causing a pH imbalance. It is also better for the environment. One cup can last you a decade! Imagine not having to buy any menstrual products until 2030. According to the GoingZeroWaste blog, by switching to a menstrual cup, you’re diverting at the least 2,880 tampons and pads from the landfill.
Now, just like with tampons, there is a learning curve with menstrual cups. I remember watching about a dozen YouTube videos on how to insert/remove your menstrual cup, but I was still quite freaked out when I had to actually do it. Now, couple months later, I would never go back to tampons. I only have to change my cup twice a day, and there is never any smell or leaking. There are many different brands of menstrual cups on the market. It is best to do your research before you settle on one. I personally use the Dutchess Menstrual Cup.
Though my bathroom is not completely sustainable or zero-waste (it’s actually nowhere near it), I am very happy about the little steps I have taken so far. As I mentioned already, this lifestyle won’t happen overnight, but every step you take towards better environment counts!
The perks of having friends supportive of your writing are countless. One of them, however, is very important when my inspiration decides to slither away into oblivion. Couple days ago, when I was complaining about not knowing what my next post should be about, my friend Hannah quickly pointed out that “Spring Cleaning Your Body” would be an interesting read (thanks, Hannie)!
If you’re anything like me, when spring finally comes around, you look at yourself in the mirror and with horror start wondering what happened to your body during the last few months of hibernation. So, what now? Maybe it’s time to add our bodies to the spring cleaning routine.
Make Healthier Choices
Sounds like such a cliché, right? Alas, there is no way around this one. Winter has a way of luring us into eating a ton of less-than-nutritious foods. Plainly said, we load up on junk.
Let’s be clear. I’m not telling you to quit all sugar and most carbs — even though according to Dr. Gary Taubes, that would be the best option (you can read more about this in his books Why We Get Fat, The Case Against Sugar, and Good Calories, Bad Calories). I tried, and failed … many times. I will probably try again; but in the meantime, I’m trying to be careful about what I put into my body. I will indulge in a candy bar, but also choose to have salad for lunch. Just take small steps!
Flush the system out with water and herbal teas.
Drinking plenty of water is a perfect way to cleanse and hydrate. We all know it and most of us drag our bodies through a state of dehydration almost every day. Too bad we can’t see all the toxins floating in our body — I’m sure that if we could, we’d do better at trying to get rid of them.
Research the chemicals in your cleaning supplies and cosmetics.
You all know how much I love makeup. There is no way I’ll switch to all natural brands any time soon. However, I can be more mindful of other things I am surrounding myself with. I made the switch to the Seventh Generation products (i.e. detergent, dish soap, multi-purpose cleaner, and hand soap) a while ago, but there is still much room for improvement. Again, I’m just trying to find some balance! Are you with me?
I’m not talking about nudity here …. please do not leave your house without your clothes! When it comes to your face, however, go naked as often as possible. If you know that you won’t be leaving the house on Saturday, let your skin breath! I’m sure your mailman won’t be as horrified as you think.
Oh no … the ‘e’ word. Please do pardon my language — I couldn’t help myself. There is no point in listing all the benefits of regular exercising because we all know them. There is a silver lining though! Spring usually brings just the perfect weather for a walk. Even if you don’t break a sweat, it’s better than not moving at all.
I can’t talk about fitness without mentioning FabFitFun! They have been generous enough to offer my subscribers $10 off their first FabFitFun box (just use the code “SPRINGLOVE”). Boxes come out 4 times a year and are customisable. Have a look at the Spring Edition by clicking on picture below.
Surround yourself with plants.
Plants can not only bring you happiness; but they can also, according to Generation Good, purify the air in your house. Disclaimer — your faux plants from Target might look pretty, but they won’t do you much good. Sorry for raining on your parade! So, which one should you bring home?
Don’t have a plant nursery nearby? Don’t worry! Amazon has a great selection!
Now that you read my tips for spring cleaning your body, I would love to hear from you! How do you get your health and well-being back on track?
Four days into the year and it still feels odd to be writing 2019. Anyway, to give you a break from my Happiness Project (which is going great, by the way), I decided to share some of the bath products I want to try this year. So, as always, grab a cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate/whatever-you-love-to-drink and prepare to spend some money (sorry about that)!
I really really really want to try this one. According to the reviews, the Rub Rub Rub by Lush is everything you’re looking for in a scrub. It exfoliates your skin and leaves it perfectly moisturised. Everyone who has tried it raves about the amazing scent as well. Intrigued yet? I know I am!
Okay, I have a slight obsession with cute designs, but can you blame me? Who wants to look at an ugly bottle every day? This body was is eco-friendly and contains no harsh chemicals. Want to try it too? You can easily get it at Ulta!
I have only tried products from Zoella’s Botanics collection (thanks to my friend Olivia), but I absolutely love them. Also, bubbles make me happy, and that’s enough to make me want to try this product!
Another Lush product that caught my eye. It’s called Marshmallow World, and I’m sure it’ll make you feel like Alice in Wonderland — I’m not sure how I made that connection, but bear with me. And imagine the tapestry of colours in your bath tub. Yep, I’m in.
Have you tried any of these bath products? What’s on your ‘to-try’ list? I would love to hear from you! If you want to check out more posts like this one? You can do so right here.
